Open call for light art curators: FLASH Curatorial Residency in Helsinki

Finnish Light Art Society FLASH announces the third edition of the FLASH Curatorial Residency in Helsinki, Finland. The dates of the residency are January 8th to 11th 2026. The residency is organised in collaboration with Lux Helsinki and Home Hotel Jugend.

THE RESIDENCY

The residency includes visiting Lux Helsinki festival and other art exhibitions, getting to know Finnish light artists, networking with international light art professionals, professional program of Lux Helsinki, including the Symposium, and the utmost highlight in the light art social calendar: the 9th birthday party of FLASH.

The residency program is free of charge. The accommodation in Home Hotel Jugend 8th to 11th January is provided by the Residency. It includes breakfast and afternoon coffee (residency timetable allowing). The participants are responsible for their travel costs and (most of) their meals.

There is a maximum of seven spots available via open call. Priority is given to curators with experience in curating light art, but we’d like to invite curators with incipient interest in light to apply as well. The residency is for all curators around the world, Finland based curators excluded.

APPLYING

To apply, send an informal application letter to residency organizer Mia Kivinen, mia.kivinen@valotaiteenseura.fi by midnight August 23rd, 2025.

The application should not exceed 5000 characters in total, and it should include:

• Introduction as a (light art) curator
• Short merit list
• Three Finnish / Finland based light artists you’d like to meet. You may check FLASH Database for references, but the artist doesn’t have to be listed there.
• Anything else you might want to tell us

The participants are chosen by Ms. Mia Kivinen and a representative of FLASH, by September 2nd, 2024. All the applicants will be informed of the decisions.

SELF-PAYING VISITORS

Do you want to take part in the program at your own / your organisation’s expense? For a limited amount of light art professionals, who take care of their own accommodation and other costs, there is a possibility to attend the residency program or parts of it. Contact Ms. Kivinen, if you want to be one of those persons!

FUNDING HELP

Either chosen via the open call or attending as a self-paying visitor, you might want to apply for a travel grant or other funding. Ms. Kivinen is here to help you with the paperwork you need from the inviter and to advise with the applications.
